7 Secrets to Stay Fit During the Holidays

Hey it's Dean your Wellness Coach. Did you know that most people gain 4 to six pounds between Thanksgiving and New Years day? Don't be that person!

Even if your schedule is filled with family obligations, traveling and corporate celebrations with all sorts of tasty treats.

Make important decisions today to prevent having to dig yourself out of the fitness hole.

Here are their secrets to staying fit during the season of overindulgence:

  1. Moving It:

Stay active. try not to miss your workouts. And don't sit too long. Too much sitting is hazardous to your health. New data suggests at least twice as many deaths occur due to a lack of exercise than due to being overweight and obesity!

Stepping away from you desk for just a few minutes every 30 to 60 minutes and performing light activity (such as walking, stretching or performing simple squat exercises) reduces the risk of diabetes and other heart disease risk factors.

  1. Prepare For Success:

The holidays can devastate your exercise and weight-loss efforts. Start each day with a plan for success, prepare foods in advance and bring them with you. Have high fiber veggies washed, cut and ready when you are. Also, plan your cheat - Allow yourself one SMALL cheat item each day.

  1. Drink Water:

Stay Hydrated. Your brain can sometimes confuse thirst for hunger. A large glass of water first thing in the morning and before a meal can help lessen the amount of food you consume. Try to drink half your body weight in ounces. Yes, that is a lot more water than you may be drinking now, so start small and build up to the recommended amount. You'll be glad you did.

  1. Exercise Early:

Making sure workouts are in the morning because we all know work, family, and life will demand your time. You have more control over your mornings than any other time of day. So exercise early!

  1. Extra Exercise:

Since your calorie intake may increase, we will need to increase our movement too. Make the additional activity a family affair – like taking a family walk around the neighborhood before and after your Thanks Giving meal. Do the same before and after opening Christmas presents. Be creative when it comes to ways to have quality time with family and friends while also prioritizing your health."

  1. Indulge One Meal:

Food is all around us. Friends, family, venders, secretaries, keep bringing tasty treats to work and laying them before you like you are royalty. It's easy to overindulge with this never ending supply of unhealthy feed - and so many leftoversis upon us. Avoid unhealthy leftovers by giving it away or throwing it out.

  1. It's a Day, Not a Season:

"Enjoy the holiday. If you worry about eating too much on this single day, the reality is that one day won't make or break your health plan. Unfortunately, most people start a pattern of over eating or skip exercise due to work activities, or visiting relatives. Enjoy the holiday, but don't let it go from a day of celebration to a month of indulgence that leads to unwanted body fat and no physical exercise.
